No one loves cancel culture more than conservatives

For the past year, conservative outrage over “cancel culture” has been used as a cudgel to avoid criticism and fan the flames of the GOP’s manufactured culture wars. From the renaming of the Mr. Potato Head brand to the innocuous use of the term “birthing people,” conservatives have become experts at generating fake outrage to stoke fear among their base and incite moral panic.

Republican commentators and politicians have used this alarmism over “cancel culture” to drum up hysteria over non-issues and portray themselves as victims of the “woke” mob. This has become such an effective tool in the GOP’s…

Republicans are simply repackaging their decades-long opposition to social justice.

In the midst of eating their own and pledging their undying loyalty to former President Donald Trump, Republicans are keeping themselves busy by waging a fake culture war on cancel culture and the “woke left.” Not a day goes by, as of late, where Fox News anchors and their congressional sycophants aren’t generating fake outrage by lying to their audience about toys and children’s books or parading around so-called victims of “cancel culture.” While this is not a new phenomenon, the language being used to describe it is.

Republicans are once again co-opting the language of progressives and people of…

Former Sen. Rick Santorum tried to erase Native American culture from American history

Speaking at a conference for the Young America’s Foundation last week, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum falsely claimed that white colonizers built the United States from nothing, dismissing the influence of Native American culture.

In an attempt to whitewash American history and peddle the myth of American exceptionalism, Santorum insisted that Native Americans made no contributions to America’s cultural legacy. “We came here and created a blank slate. We birthed a nation from nothing,” Santorum said. “I mean, there was nothing here. I mean, yes we have Native Americans, but candidly there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture.”

Derek Chauvin is just one of many bad apples

On Tuesday, a Minnesota jury found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty on all three charges for the murder of George Floyd. The verdict was the result of a video recording of Mr. Floyd’s murder, a harrowing year of Black Lives Matter protests, and a lengthy and emotional trial. While many Americans didn’t need a trial to know that Chauvin was guilty of murder, the prosecution laid out a strong case, using the testimony of medical experts to prove to the jury, and the whole world, that Mr. Floyd’s death was the direct result of Chauvin’s use of excessive force…

Denying trans kids access to life-saving medical care will have deadly consequences.

The growing and coordinated attacks on transgender rights are quickly gaining momentum across the country. Conservative lawmakers have introduced a record number of anti-trans bills in more than two dozen states, most of which specifically target trans youth. Arkansas is just the latest state to turn these discriminatory bills into a dark reality, the consequences of which will be nothing short of deadly.

On Monday, the Arkansas state legislature passed a bill banning gender-affirming medical care for trans youth, becoming the first state in the country to deny minors access to life-saving and medically necessary treatment. …

Meghan McCain thinks diversity is a “slippery slope.”

During a conversation on The View about Asian American representation in President Joe Biden’s cabinet on Wednesday, Meghan McCain went on a rant about “identity politics” and America’s alleged meritocracy. While the rest of the show’s panel members seemed to agree that it was appropriate for Democratic Senators Tammy Duckworth and Mazie Hirono to demand that the Biden administration diversify its high-level staff, McCain took issue with it, claiming that only the “most qualified” people should be appointed to such prestigious positions.

“I believe that what makes America exceptional is the fact that we’re a meritocracy that you can be…

Criticism is not the same as censorship.

During a radio interview on the “Joe Pags Show” last week, Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson (R) confessed that he never felt threatened by the mostly white insurrectionists who launched the deadly attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6 because he “knew those were people that love this country, that truly respect law enforcement, [and] would never do anything to break the law.” He went on to add, however, that he would have feared for his life and safety had they been Black Lives Matter protesters.

This is utterly delusional, considering the supposedly patriotic insurrectionists he speaks so highly of maimed…

Trans sports bans are about bigotry, not fairness.

A record number of anti-transgender bills are currently sweeping the nation, and some of them are dangerously close to being signed into law. While it is only March, the number of state bills targeting trans kids has already greatly surpassed the amount proposed in 2020.

So far, Republicans in 25 states have introduced 73 anti-trans bills this year, 65 of which specifically single out trans kids by seeking to deny them gender-affirming medical care and prevent them from playing on school sports teams in accordance with their gender identity. …

If passed, the bill would ban anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination across the board.

The U.S. House of Representatives is set vote on the Equality Act next week. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) confirmed the LGBTQ+ civil rights legislation will be “coming to the floor next week” in a “Dear Colleague” letter obtained by the Washington Blade on Tuesday.

If passed, the Equality Act would amend existing civil rights law, like the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Fair Housing Act, and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, to include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected characteristics.

While the Supreme Court’s ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County banned anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination in the workplace…

The lawsuit accuses Trump and Giuliani of conspiring with extremist groups to incite the insurrection.

The NAACP and Missouri Rep. Bennie Thompson (D) filed a civil lawsuit against former President Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani on Tuesday, accusing the pair of conspiring with far-right extremist groups to incite the attack on the U.S. Capitol and block the certification of the election.

The lawsuit contends that Trump and Giuliani, along with the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, violated the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, which prohibits any actions that interfere with Congress’ constitutional duties.

The suit comes just days after the Senate voted to acquit Trump in his impeachment trial and echoes many of…
