In an explosive report released Monday, ProPublica exposed a private Facebook group in which both current and former Border Patrol Agents posted a series of violent and derogatory comments aimed at undocumented immigrants and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Several screenshots obtained reveal that the secret Facebook group is littered with sexually explicit and racist comments about Latinx members of Congress who recently visited detention facilities in Texas. One member suggested throwing burritos at the visiting lawmakers, while another added, “There should be no photo ops for these scum buckets.”
Other attacks got more personal, however. Included in the screenshots were sexually graphic memes of New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of which is crudely titled, “Lucky Illegal Immigrant Glory Hole Starring AOC.”
In addition to disparaging members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, several of the group’s posts openly mock the deaths of undocumented immigrants, questioning the authenticity of the heartbreaking photos of a young man and his daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande while attempting to cross the border. Sharing one of the viral images, one member commented, “I HAVE NEVER SEEN FLOATERS LIKE THIS, could this be another edited photo. We’ve all seen the dems and liberal parties do some pretty sick things.”
In another conversation, members expressed complete nonchalance and indifference over the report of a 16-year-old migrant child who died while in U.S. custody. “If he dies, he dies,” one user responded, while another posted a meme of Elmo that read, “Oh well.”
Due to the release of this enlightening report, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol is currently investigating the private Facebook group and other potential racist, sexist, and xenophobic comments made by Border Patrol Agents on social media, vowing to hold any agents accountable for violating their code of conduct.
