President Donald Trump called Sen. Kamala Harris a “monster” during an hour-long interview with Fox Business Thursday morning.
Just the night before, Harris made history as the first Black and Asian American woman to participate in a vice presidential debate.
Instead of calmly discussing the content of the debate, however, the President insisted on hurling racist and misogynistic attacks against the California senator and vice presidential candidate.
“This monster that was on stage with Mike Pence, who destroyed her last night by the way, but this monster, she says no, no there won’t be fracking. Everything she said is a lie,” Trump told Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo.
He even went on to falsely claim that Harris is “a communist.”
“I thought that wasn’t even a contest last night. She was terrible. I don’t think you could get worse. And totally unlikable. And she is,” Trump added. “She’s a communist.”
Of course this is not the first time the President has engaged in baseless attacks against Harris. He has previously called her “angry,” “incompetent,” “nasty,” and a “madwoman,” all loaded terms associated with racist and misogynistic stereotypes and tropes.
While Trump is used to insulting his political opponents, Harris is the first politician he has referred to as a “monster.” In the past, the President has reserved this affront to describe gang members, terrorists, and mass shooters.
So what did Harris due to deserve this new nickname? Nothing. She’s just a smart and powerful woman of color: Trump’s worst nightmare.
“Calling the first Black woman to ever take the Vice Presidential debate stage a ‘monster’ tells you all you need to know about President Trump’s respect for women and people of color,” Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey tweeted on Thursday.
Words like “monster” and “madwoman” are often used to dehumanize and delegitimize women of color in order to try to take away their credibility. This latest attack against Harris is not simply a dog whistle. It’s blatant misogynoir.
From his constant insults and attacks against US Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar to his latest jab against Kamala Harris, Trump has proven time and time again that he has no respect for Black women and women of color in Congress and beyond.
